Express Entry

Express Entry (EE) is an online application system that allows you to submit a profile and be considered as a skilled immigrant.  Through this process, candidates with the highest rankings are invited to apply for permanent residency.

Under the Express Entry system, there are three categories of applications for permanent residence.

  1. Federal Skilled Workers
  2. Federal Skilled Trades and;
  3. Canadian Experience Class

In order to be eligible to apply under the Express Entry Program, you must fall into one of the above categories. If you do not qualify under the relevant programs, then the profile will be rejected, and you will not be able to continue under the Express Entry.

If you wish to immigrate to Canada under the Express Entry system, you must qualify under one of the above three categories by completing the EE Profile. This is an online tool that allows you to fill out the form and provide details of your skills, experience, education, language ability, and family information. Once you meet the criteria set out, you will be placed into a pool of potential candidates.

It is important to note that in order to demonstrate language skills a language test must be provided and must be supported by the Educational Credential Assessment to determine Canadian equivalency.

The Express Entry system ranks candidates based on a point system referred to as the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The CRS will measure factors such as age, work experience, language skills, education, and whether the candidate has a job offer or not.  Points will be awarded based on the information provided in your profile, and for having a provisional nomination. There are a total of 1200 points available, depending on what information the candidate provides.

You are invited to apply for permanent residence if you have the highest CRS scores. Typically, the highest scores are dependent on the number of people in the pool, and their qualifications.  Once the invitation to apply is provided, the candidate will have 90 days to submit an online application for permanent residence. Once received, the immigration authorities process these applications within six months of approval.

Express entry draws take place regularly at the immigration authorities’ discretion, usually every two weeks or so.  Typically, Candidates can stay in the Express Entry pool for up to 12 months. Candidates are permitted to re-register if they wish to do so after the 12-month period, so long as they qualify under the 3 categories mentioned above.
